Lesson 34 – Free time

I think Derek is thinking of what compliment he should give her.

Street Conversation XXXIV

I’m back with Simple Romanian but the conversation below actually made me quit all of my hobbies and become a professional bodybuilder.

Sergiu: Ce-ţi place să faci în timpul liber?

What do you like to do in your free time?

Girl: Să citesc, să mă uit la filme, să cânt, să colorez, să mă duc la* excursii, să vorbesc cu prietenii, cam atât.

To read, to watch movies, to sing, to color, to go on trips, to talk to friends, that’s about it.

*The correct form is “în excursii” not “la excursii”.

Grammar XXXIV

Verbs

Today we will conjugate the verb to give, now that we really know how to take quite well. Here it is:

Dau, dai, dă, dăm, daţi, dau

Now for the verb we were waiting for since lesson 33. How to conjugate the verb to be in the conjunctive. Since it represents an exception to the rules, here it is below:

Să fiu, să fii, să fie, să fim, să fiţi, să fie

Example: Sper să fie bun şi să îmi dea nişte bani.

I hope that he’s good and that he gives me some money.

O ţigară poate să fie de asemenea un dop pentru urechi.

A cigarette can also be an ear plug.

Very important to distinguish between “he gives me” (îmi dă) and “that he gives me” (să îmi dea)

One is always going to use the cojunctive form after “să” (that/to)  but not after “că” (that).

Dialogue XXXIV

Sergiu: Ce îţi place să faci în weekend?

What do you like to do in the week-end?

Daniela: Îmi place să stau şi să fumez în afara localurilor.

I like to sit and smoke outside of pubs.

Sergiu: De ce nu faci asta înăuntru?

Why don’t you do that inside?

Daniela: Că nu mai e voie, Sergiu, nu mai e voie!

Because it’s not allowed anymore, Sergiu, it’s not allowed anymore!

Sergiu: Hm, ce chestie!

Hm, what a thing!

  1. Bună seara dragă echipă!!!Nu sunt sigură dar cred că ați facut o greșeală aici…să îmi dea niște bani…ar trbuie să fie scris că asta…să îmi dă niște bani !!!

      1. Bună seara Evelyne,
Voi corecta greșelile pe care le-ai făcut:
It is not “ar trebuie” but “ar trebui” (See lessons 42 and 43)
“Că asta” means “that that” so that’s wrong. “Ca asta” (like that) is closer, but it would still be wrong as Romanians say “așa” in this context (like this/like that).
Finally: “dea” is correct as it’s the conjunctive form of the verb “a da”, while dă is simply the indicative form of the verb.
        Sergiu
