Lesson 27 – Paying the bill

Old Town
Here I am paying the bill in Old Town.

Street Conversation XXVII

Roleplay alert! Random girl and I are not that good here, but we tried.

Sergiu: Nota de plată, vă rog!

The bill, please!

Random girl: Plătesc eu.

I pay.  (The pronun is put after the verb here to emphasize the subject of the action)

Sergiu: În niciun caz. Lasă-mă pe mine!

No way. Let me do it!

Random girl: Mai bine plăteşti data viitoare.

It’s better you pay next time.

Sergiu: Bine.

Fine.

Grammar XXVII

Verbs

The verb of the day is a plăti (to pay). This is what you do when you go out to eat or pretty much do anything nowadays, so we should definitely learn this one fast as beginners.

Plătesc I pay
Plăteşti You pay
Plăteşte He pays
Plătim We pay
Plătiţi You pay
Plătesc They pay

Nouns

Now, please go review lesson 20 as this lesson spins off of it. We are going to learn how to put a definite article on nouns ending in ă and e.

For the ă nouns we have:

Seară (Night) – Seara (The night)

Firmă – Firma

Marfă – Marfa

We just transform the ă into an a.

For the plural all you have to do is add -le

Serile, firmele, mărfurile

Nouns ending in -e are easy as well. The general rule is adding -le but only if the nouns are neuter or masculine in gender. Feminine nouns add an -a

We have peştele and numele but mâncarea.

The definite plural here varies quite a lot.

We have peştii, numele and mâncărurile. The word nume is actually more special in this regard, as it does not have a plural form. Other than that, the rule is if the plural of the noun ends with -uri, you just add a -le. A noun ending in -i is going to add another one to keep it company.
