Lesson 28 – Facebook friends

learn romanian
I haven’t spoken to my family in 6 months but I poked half my friends on Facebook for the last week.

Street Conversation XXVIII

Probably the funniest conversation so far. I pretended to know the girl from Facebook, as if I’m some kind of stalker…hahaha. I’m not.

Sergiu: Arăți puțin diferit în realitate.

You look a little different in real life.

Girl: Dar cine ești, de unde mă știi?

But who are you, where do you know me from?

Sergiu: Suntem prieteni pe Facebook, știu că mâine e ziua ta de naștere.

We’re friends on Facebook. I know tomorrow’s your birthday.

Girl: Serios, așa de interesat ești?

Really, are you that interested?

Sergiu: Da.

Yes.

Grammar XXVIII

Verbs

Today’s two verbs are going to be a întâlni (to meet) and a arăta (to show, to look like). We met a întâlni before in the various lessons concerning întâlniri de afaceri (business meetings).

Mă întâlnesc I meet
Te întâlnești You meet
Se întâlnește He meets
Ne întâlnim We meet
Vă întâlniți You meet
Se întâlnesc They meet

You translate literally with “I meet myself, you meet yourself, we meet ourselves etc.”

Mă întâlnesc cu cineva.  (The word cu is mandatory with this verb)

I am meeting with someone. (Literally I am meeting myself with somebody)

Arăt I show
Arăți You show
Arată He, she shows
Arătăm We show
Arătați You show
Arată They show

Ți-aș putea arăta lucruri incredibile.

I could show you incredible things.

How do you say “I would go” or “I would meet”?

You don’t know because most beginners courses don’t cover this VERY important subject. People use “would” more than you think. This is very simple to express in Romanian. Use the following particles before the infinitive form of the verb depending on the person.
Aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar

Aș mânca – I would eat

Ai trece – You would pass

Ar avea – He, she would have

Am merge – We would go

Ați întâlni – You would meet or v-ați întâlni – literally (you would meet yourselves/each other)

Ar vrea – They would want

Dialogue XXVIII

Sergiu: Arăți puțin diferit în realitate.

You look a little different in real life.

Daniela: Cine ești?

Who are you?

Sergiu: Suntem prieteni pe Facebook. Știu că mâine e ziua ta de naștere.

We’re friends on Facebook. I know tomorrow’s your birthday.

Daniela: Nu prea întâlnești lume nouă, așa-i?

You don’t really meet new people, do you?

Sergiu: Nu.

No.
